Run-DMC to Become Next Hip Hop Act to Have a Biopic

Well, if you’re a fan of rap’s history and the artists who were pioneers for the art form, then you’ll be delighted to hear that arguably hip-hop’s biggest pioneers will finally grace the silver screen. Cheo Hodari Coker, a renowned hip-hop journalist and screenwriter of the most recent hip-hop biopic, ‘Notorious,’ will begin work on the flick based on the rap legends Run-DMC.
Coker hopes to have similar success to the acclaim ‘Notorious’ is receiving. The movie, based on the life of hip-hop legend The Notorious B.I.G., pulled in $21 million in its first weekend of release this January, giving Fox Searchlight Pictures its highest first weekend gross in the company’s history. Coker wrote ‘Unbelievable: The Life, Death, and Afterlife of the Notorious B.I.G.’ That book was parlayed into what became the screenplay for ‘Notorious.’ A similar process will apply for the Run DMC flick as the screenplay will derive from the book ‘Tougher Than Leather: The Rise of Run-DMC -- The Authorized Biography’ written by former Def Jam executive Bill Adler.
Dallas Jackson, president of DJ Classicz, the production company behind this project, is elated to be a part of this project.
"It's an extraordinary rags-to-riches journey that I'm eager to bring to the screen," DJ Classicz Jackson said. "And I'm hoping to have Run, DMC and Russell Simmons' involvement. This will be a big movie about the 1980s hip-hop movement that took over the world."
The rap group which consisted of Reverend Run, DMC, and Jam Master Jay originated from Hollis, Queens and can be credited with rap’s breakthrough into the mainstream with the song, ‘Walk This Way,’ their collaboration with Aerosmith. Songs such as ‘It’s Tricky,’ ‘It’s Like That,’ and ‘King of Rock,’ are forever hailed as rap classics. They were the epitome of hip-hop fashion and spearheaded a style of fashion that still exists today. Sadly, Jam Master Jay was shot and killed in Queens in October of 2002. Run DMC will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on April 4, only the second rap act in history to be presented with this honor.
If you liked watching the life story of Biggie Smalls on the big screen, then you will love watching a movie about how Run DMC took themselves—and hip-hop—to the top. Would you be interested in watching this movie once it’s done? Tell us your thoughts and who you would like to see be the actors who play Rev Run, DMC, and Jam Master Jay.
